I've read a few articles recently saying that pedicabs and rickshaws are entertainment and shouldn't be viewed as transportation.
"'After all, a pedicab ride is less about transportation and more about the overall experience of having a personable and entertaining driver,' says Why Walk Pedicab driver Jule Pierre-Louis." Quoted in an article about pedicabs in Orlando.
"Well over here, they're not. Over here, trishaws are kiddy rides for tourists, and not the same as in England." ...and... "Trishaws there are a form of transportation, which is wrong. They're novelty rides for tourists." Comment about rickshaws in Singapore
At the same time, we tout rickshaws as green, ecological, human-powered transportation. Part of the solution to global warming.
I've also heard the term "transportainment" tossed around the industry over the last several years.
So, in your opinion, which is it? Are pedicabs and rickshaws entertainment or transportation? If they're some sort of combo hybrid, is one more important than the other?

While I would consider myself entertaining, I provide more than just entertainment. I provide people with alternative transportation. I'll have to ask my intoxicated passengers if I am merely entertainment when I offer them a ride home after a night of drinking.
I'd be willing to bet that the author of the cited comments have never operated of ridden in a pedicab/rickshaw.
