Video: Rickshaws add to evolving downtown Raleigh

I've been meaning to post this for awhile. Unfortunately, Blogger Beta doesn't seem to want to allow me to post anything with javascript, so you'll just have to visit the WRAL web site or the Raleigh Rickshaw web site to see this fabulous video.

This news piece was produced and aired during Greg's trip to Raleigh for our 4-day Operator's Training at the end of March. It was totally unscripted, but everyone, including the passengers, managed to say all the right things. (When did Donald become a ventriloquist?)

It's an awesome free commercial! Doesn't get much better than this.

Nice guns, Brian!

India Rickshaw Modernization

Unlike many transport initiatives that aim only at improving the environment, ITDP's Indian Cycle Rickshaw Modernization project also cleaned the air and increased employment and income among the poor.

In collaboration with local experts, ITDP developed a series of design innovations that made India’s traditional cycle rickshaw lighter, more comfortable, and easier to handle. ITDP’s modern rickshaw design reduced the weight of the vehicles by more than 30% and a multi-gear system made pedaling much easier.

Surveys among rickshaw operators showed that incomes increased by 20% to 50% because operators were able to work longer, attract new passengers, and because customer satisfaction rose in response to the improved comfort and safety. The project also demonstrated that the modernized cycle rickshaw could attract 19% of its riders from highly polluting, motorized rickshaws, making its impact on greenhouse gas emission reductions quantifiable.

Today, over 300,000 modernized cycle rickshaws are operating in nine of India’s major cities, including Delhi, Agra, Bharatpur, Brindavan, Mathura, Jaipur and Chandigarh. Watch the short video below highlighting the project’s impact:

Based on ITDP’s success in India, we’ve also worked with our partners in Yogyakarta to similarly revitalize the becak as a mode of transportation through improvements to its weight, maneuverability, and passenger and operator comfort. (The becak is a non-motorized, three-wheeled rickshaw, distinct from the Indian rickshaw because passengers sit in front of the driver.) The Yogyakarta Tourism Department directly ordered 50 of the modernized becaks to serve as special tourist vehicles.

During 2005, the modernized becak model was further refined and updated to address the suggestions of the drivers and passengers who used the 2004 model, the Bisma. ITDP provided modernized becaks to transport participants at the Better Air Quality conference held by the Clean Air Initiative for Asia in Yogyakarta in December, 2006. Efforts are currently focused on marketing the current model to reach a wider audience.

Pedicabbing at the Rogue Festival

Finally, a video of pedicabbing in Fresno. The Rogue Festival is an annual event that draws local artists and artists from various locations across the planet for the Tower District in Fresno California.

Better still, I can now be found on YouTube! If I die tomorrow, my life will be complete.

It's probably just me, but there is something inherently ironic in the song playing throughout the video. If you haven't picked up on it, the title is "Kicked in the head by a stripper."

Care Bears in a Pedicab

WARNING! Not for the faint of heart or stomach! You and Tenderheart Bear ride a pedicab around Times Square and end up at Toys-R-Us. The view kinda sucks since most of what you see is the left side of a brown bear head. This is very very long, so you probably won't watch the entire thing. Be ready to hit the mute button.

Brickshaw Buggy Promo Video

Rocky Chavez from Brickshaw Buggy in Oklahoma City was one of our first students. We had a chance to catch up with him again when he visited Denver a few weeks ago. They've got this great little promo video at OklaTravelNet.com. Snaps for Rocky!

Pedicab butt

Every pedicab driver knows that someone is always looking at their butt. This one showed up on YouTube! Whoever you are, I hope you got a big tip for this!

I have to admit, I like the nice butt of a pedicab driver myself. If you watched the Tour de France, you might have noticed that sponsors now have advertising on the riders' butts. What a great idea! Any pedicabbies willing to do the same? I'll be happy to sell the ad space. Send me a photo!

Rickshaw movie - wadaya think?

Check out the movie trailer on YouTube. This is being made in Canada by a retired rickshaw runner, not a pedaller. I hear he's looking for funding for this film. Any takers?

WARNING: This film will NOT be rated G.

Pedicabs Come to Downtown Raleigh

Watch the video and see them in action!

This new pedicab company received their brand new pedicabs only 3 hours before boarding a plane for Denver to attend our Pedicab Operators Weekend Intensive in April. They're already rocking and rolling on the streets of Raleigh, NC.

When we called them just before they went out the first night, they were nervous and giddy. We got a call back later that evening telling us how much fun they were having. By the way, Raleigh Rickshaw is looking for drivers.

Park And Bike Comes To Downtown Raleigh

April 27, 2007, RALEIGH, N.C. -- If the thought of hassling with parking in downtown Raleigh keeps you away, there's a new concept designed to lure you in.

They're called rickshaws and they don't even use a drop of gas.

They drive down Fayetteville Street in a fleet, ready to avoid traffic tie ups or parking hassles.

These pedal power people are getting attention.

The idea is for people to find parking spaces and then bike into where ever they need to go without tickets and headaches.

Meet Raleigh's Rickshaw. [Raleigh Rickshaw Co.]

The bike riders can take you two blocks, or perhaps two miles.

NBC17 gave it a test whirl and talked with the company's co-owner.

The owners said they have been wanting to do something like this for awhile. They said it's environmentally friendly, fun and serves downtown Raleigh.

The rickshaws come complete with tail lights and a headlight and they're totally street legal.

Loren Gold and his friend took a noon ride down Fayetteville Street. "Roomy back seats, good springs on them as well," Gold said.

It sure beats walking, or worrying about getting to your car alone at night, riders said.

"I think they'll do great on Friday and Saturday nights, between the warehouse and Glenwood and Fayetteville Street," Gold said.

Heck, if gas prices keep rising, perhaps we may need these guys to drive us to news stories.

Drivers will accept tips for now and eventually charge per block traveled.

The service hopes to eventually expand to weekdays to take people from parking garages to work downtown.

Reality or fiction? You decide.

Still a hot debate in NYC, this video and article was released by The New York Observer. Do you believe City Council Speaker Christine Quinn?

Quinn on Pedicabs, Influence, Congestion Pricing

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn thinks the idea that the taxicab industry had any "undue influence" over the Council on a bill to regulate the pedicab industry is "ridiculous."

As noted earlier, the taxi industry hired Bolton St. Johns, where Emily Giske, a major Democratic operative, is employed. She, it should be noted, did not work with the taxicab industry as her client. [clarified].

Quinn addressed the issue in a briefing just now after announcing that the Council would override the mayor's veto of the bill, which seeks to limit the number of pedicab drivers to 350. The Council will also vote to override the mayor's veto of a bill banning the use of metal baseball bats in city schools.

As for congestion pricing, Quinn said the Council is looking into the issue.

For the record, David Weprin opposes congestion pricing, as does Lew Fidler, who said that it's not bold enough on air quality and ineffective on reducing traffic. Peter Vallone, Jr is concerned, but still undecided.

NY Taxi anti-pedicab video

Posted on YouTube on December 22, this video is an example of the whining going on in NYC. What are they planning now?

Did you read all the way down here? That's awesome. Thanks!
